Jakob Smits is one of the pioneers of modern art in Belgium. The Belgian futurist Jules Schmalzigaug for example had a great admiration for Smits` use of white. In 1908 Schmalzigaug described Smits` The kiss of Judas (probably another version of the same subject) as “the lively evocation of immanent disaster” [Onze Kunst, VII, 1908]. The work in our collection was part of the Jakob Smits retrospective exhibition in 1950 at the Salon des Beaux Arts in Charleroi.
