Joseph Willaert - Diploma

Color pencil on paper
1971
34 by 23.5 cm

Joseph Willaert added Flemish couleur local to pop art. He alienated typically Flemish everyday objects (such as wall paper, traffic signs and curtains) from their proper context. His oeuvre can be seen as a parody on the narrow-minded petit bourgeois existence which the artist associated with Belgium. In this work on paper Willaert laughs at the value of a graduation certificate. His pupil Nadine Van Lierde received the certificate `because she is an angel`.
