Although most people know him as a musician Wim (Wannes) Van de Velde was a pioneer of modern art in the 1950s and 1960s. He was a member of both Group 58 (G58) and Nieuwe Vlaamse School (New Flemish School). Schilderij was actually one of the large works that was on show at Jef Verheyens New Flemish School exhibition in 1960.
