Unknown - Still life or symphony in white

Oil on panel
c. 1880
21 by 13 cm

Some still lifes are merely an excuse to demonstrate painterly skill. Although unsigned this small oil on panel is such a precious jewel. It is loosely painted in an impressionist manner that recalls the still life paintings in which the young James Ensor tries to capture light effects by juxtaposing white layers of paint.
