As early as the mid 1920s the Belgian artist Rene Guiette asked Le Corbusier to built his house in Antwerp. Guiette started off his artistic career under the influence of French cubism. After the second World War he took a lively interest in CoBrA and was part of the Art Brut movement. This work from 1953 for example suggests the influence of Jean Dubuffet, the French advocat of Art Brut. From the late 1950s onwards Guiette experiments with so-called Zen compositions in which he combines monochrome backgrounds with calligraphy and ecriture automatique.
