Louis Hilaire Carrand - The white Boulevard

Oil on panel
c. 1870
35 by 25 cm

Louis Hilaire Carrand is a French precursor of impressionism. Under the influence of the Barbizon school of painters he often studied nature but occasionally turned to modern city life. In this impression of everyday life on a snow covered French boulevard the artist pushes the use of white to its boundaries.
